What is accreditation?

The certification by an independent reviewing authority that an entity has met specific requirements and prescribed standards. Accreditation is a means of maintaining the highest standards of professionalism in a given field.

Who is the accrediting authority for criminal justice entities?

Law enforcement agencies and Inspectors General in Florida can attain accredited status through the Commission for Florida Law Enforcement Accreditation, Inc. Correctional facilities and agencies with pretrial responsibilities can achieve accredited status through the Florida Corrections Accreditation Commission, Inc.

Is accreditation mandatory for criminal justice entities?

No, currently the accreditation process is voluntary for criminal justice entities seeking accredited status.

What is the benefit of being accredited?

Among many benefits, accreditation provides a blueprint for building an agency committed to providing value-based services through accountability and transparency to the communities it serves.

How does a criminal justice entity become accredited?

  • The agency must apply to their respective accrediting authority to participate in the accreditation process.

  • The agency will be required to demonstrate compliance with all applicable mandatory standards and if allowed, not less than a percentage of applicable non-mandatory standards.

  • Proof of compliance with the standards is determined by an assessment team sent by the Commission, conducting a formal review of the agency's policies, procedures and practices.

  • Assistance is available from the Commission in the form of sample policies, consultation with accredited agencies, and informal peer evaluation.

  • Agencies remain accredited for a period of three years. After the three year period, they must be reaccredited.
